By fate – or maybe design – the author came upon the 400-year-old notebooks in Nottingham Castle, written by her ancestress. The characters are all real people, with stories drawn from a memoir from the 1660s. The vivid account brought her seventeenth-century family to life, and inspired her to honour the truth of her words in the Lydiard Chronicles novels.
