Mike Bowden (1960 – 2025), former Trustee and Chair of the Friends of Lydiard Park, was a devoted advocate for Lydiard and the people of Swindon. Passionate, tireless, and deeply committed to justice, he never wavered in his support for the causes he believed in. His generosity, sharp wit, and unwavering sense of fairness made him a champion for those in need and a friend to many. He was a big man in every way—his presence, his personality, and above all, his heart.
Mike’s leadership during the Lydiard Park Restoration Project in the early 2000s ensured that funding and resources supported the ambitious project to bring Lydiard Park back to life. Mike stepped up again in 2016 as head of Lydiard Park Heritage Trust when the future of Lydiard was at risk, successfully leading an initiative to ensure Swindon’s beloved park remained accessible for the community. As a Trustee of the Friends, his depth of business knowledge and boundless energy contributed significantly to the charity’s success.
Mike’s tireless efforts to preserve and protect Swindon’s historic treasure were driven by a deep sense of duty and an unrelenting vision for its future. Through the many challenges and uncertainties faced over the years, his lion-hearted courage, determination, audacity, and, at times, sheer force of will ensured that Lydiard remained a beloved asset for the people of Swindon and beyond. Whether at our Trustees’ meetings or Friends’ events, Mike was always a breath of fresh air, wholeheartedly committed to whatever was going on.
Though we deeply mourn Mike’s passing, we take solace in the legacy he leaves behind. His vision, his drive, and his courage will continue to guide us as we honour his memory by ensuring the future of Lydiard Park. It has been a joy and a privilege to know Mike, to work alongside him, to share in his dreams and help preserve his vision.
Our thoughts are with Sarah and his family at this incredibly difficult time. May you find comfort in the cherished stories and memories of Mike’s life.
Mike, we will miss you terribly.
