Piper’s ‘Bolingbroke at Lydiard Tregoze’ on display at “A Very British Art Revolution’ at Museum & Art Swindon

Members of the Friends were among the guests at the launch of the ‘A Very British Art Revolution’ exhibition at the Museum & Art Gallery, Swindon, a fascination exhibition which runs through 5th July, 2025.

On display is Lydiard’s own ‘Bolingbroke at Lydiard Tregoze’ a depiction of the Golden Cavalier monument in St. Mary’s Church. Painted by John Piper in 1940. Piper was among a group of experimental artists working during the interwar period.

Rev Canon Brian Carne, Rector at St. Mary’s 1960-68, wrote in his seminal work about the polyptych ‘Curiously Painted’.

‘John Piper told me, in conversation one day outside the church, that, settling himself for sleep each night, he summoned up one of a few striking visual memories, one of which was the early morning sun coming through St. Mary’s East window …’
